Attention Store Owners
Dear Independent Pharmacy Owner:The Community Pharmacies of
Indiana (CPI) needs you! Without your membership, we will
not be able to sustain an organization that has worked very hard to
fight for Independent pharmacy in Indiana.
CPI has focused its efforts on transferring store ownership,
building entrepreneurship among students in the schools of pharmacy
through its summer internship program, and actively working on
legislation on behalf of independent pharmacy.
Each year, CPI attends the Butler University and Purdue University
career fairs. During the career fair exhibits, board members
distribute information about CPI and actively recruit students for
the summer internship program. Several students have expressed an
interest in store ownership after completing their summer
internship. CPI spends approximately $18,000 each year to fund part
of the student intern salaries.
CPI monitored store closings and actively worked to recruit
pharmacists for independent store ownership. Our goal is to match
buyers with sellers in an effort to prevent stores being closed
because of store acquisition.
CPI spent over $70,000 on lobbying efforts in 2002 and 2003. In
2002, CPI also contributed $25,000 in legal fees towards the lawsuit
against Medicaid to stop pharmacy reimbursement cuts. This action
saved our members thousands of dollars by preventing the proposed
fee cuts. Last year, CPI successfully pushed the mail-order bill,
which prohibits insurance companies, health maintenance
organizations and the state employees health plan from requiring
covered individuals to receive prescription medications from mail
order pharmacies. The House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1757 became effective
July 1, 2003. This new law will ensure that patients have access to
their community pharmacist. Patients are no longer required
to utilize mail-order prescriptions (this does not apply to ERISA-exempt
self-funded benefit plans).
Finally, CPI worked closely with the Indiana Pharmacists Alliance
(IPA) to communicate its program to all members of the IPA. CPI
placed a display ad in IPA’s monthly newsletter and quarterly
journal. The ad in the IPA journal has resulted in responses from
several pharmacists who expressed an interest in owning and operating
independent pharmacies.
CPI spent $115,453 in 2002 and $132,370 in 2003 to accomplish
these things. This averages to approximately $619 per store
represented*.
